Wimbledon 2011 - full with surprises
The 125th Wimbledon Tournament at the All England Club was filled with surprises. Only the Men’s Singles provided a number one seed (Rafa Nadal) against a number two seed (Novak Djokovic). When it comes time to replay this year’s events and reflect upon this year’s tournament, the thrill of numerous upsets and determined play by the new titleholders will make the 2011 Wimbledon Tournament stand above all others.
Novak Djokovic & Petra Kvitova - Wimbledon 2011 Winners
It was a disappointing finish for many players but none fell harder than Scotland’s 4th seed, Andy Murray. Nadal took control against Murray and never let up. Murray is still in quest of his first Grand Slam title as is the women’s top seed Caroline Wozniacki.
In the women’s singles, form definitely failed as the 8th seeded Petra Kvitova brushed aside every obstacle on the way to her first Grand Slam title.

The Men – Novak Djokovic

When there was only one man left standing, it was Serbia’s second seed, Novak Djokovic. For the most part, Novak Djokovic made it look easy. He was pushed by Jo Will Tsonga, who defeated Roger Federer in the quarters.
He was also pushed briefly by Nadal, but the title seemed to be his throughout the match play on Sunday. This is Djokovic’s first Wimbledon title and brought his season record to 48–1.
Djokovic has won seven other tournaments this season. With this scorecard, they might as well hand Novak the 2011 player of the year title right now.
The Women - Petra Kvitova

The top three seeds were eliminated early at Wimbledon. Left-handed Czech Petra Kvitova played brilliantly and responded to pressure with a calm confidence. The eighth seed was pushed to three sets in the quarterfinals by young Tsvetana Pironkova. 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
The champion was also pushed to the limit by dangerous 4th seed Victoria Azarenka, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the semis. In the finals against Maria Sharapova, Kvitova took charge early after a difficult hold in her first service game and never lost the momentum, defeating the 5th seed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Kvitova has won three other titles this year and looks to be a top five player very soon. She has the power of the Williams sisters and the baseline play of Caroline Wozniacki. Her serve is strong and will only get better. Look for Kvitova to pile a few more titles on this season.
Men’s Double – Bryan Brothers
Bob Bryan & Mike Bryan (USA) defeated Robert Lindstedt (SWE) & Horia Tecau (ROU) by 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2)

American men’s singles tennis is nearing an all-time low, but the Bryan brothers solidified their hold as the top ranked doubles team. In the best of five matches, the Bryans survived a tough five set thriller in their semifinal match and overcame the 2010 runner-ups 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Eighth seeded Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau provided a stern test and three sets of tense, pressure packed tennis on Centre Court.
However, the Bryans got their stiffest test in the semis against 6th seed Michael Llorda and Nenad Zimonjic 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-7 (4), 9-7 in 3 hours plus.
Llorda and Zimonjic had 25 aces in the match but only converted 1 of 10 break chances. The Bryans broke 4 of 15 opportunities in one of the best semifinal doubles matches ever played at the All England Club.
Women’s Double - Peschke and Srebotnik
Kveta Peschke (CZE) & Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) defeated Sabine Lisicki (GER) & Samantha Stosur (AUS) by 6-3, 6-1.

The number two seeds Czech Kveta Peschke and Slovakian Katarina Srebotnik overcame Sonia Mirza and Elena Vesnina in the semis and knocked off Samantha Stosur and Sabine Lisicki in the finals 6-3, 6-1. Stosur and Lisicki have two of the best serves in the women’s game and had played through the tournament as unseeded. Peschke and Srebotnik exhibited the experience and teamwork that have characterized their recent successes. Their success was their ability to win 60 percent of the points in which they received service.
Mix Doubles – Melzer and Benesova
Jurgen Melzer (AUT) & Iveta Benesova (CZE) defeated Mahesh Bhupathi (IND) & Elena Vesnina (RUS) by 6-3, 6-2

Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Czech Iveta Benesova only faced two break point chances against fourth seed Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Vesnina, who is fast becoming an excellent doubles player. The Mixed Doubles Champions won an outstanding 82 percent of their service games in the finals. The winners tallied 7 aces in the 51 minute 6-3, 6-2 win. They won 86 percent of their serving points. Bhupathi and Vesnina only won 18 percent of receiving points.
Luke Saville - Wimbledon 2011 Boys Singles Winner
Boy’s Singles - Luke Saville
Luke Saville (AUS) defeated Liam Broady (GBR) by 2-6, 6-4, 6-2
16th seed Australian Luke Saville downed 15th seed Liam Broady of Great Britain in three well-played sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Both players went through surges where they easily handled the opponent’s serve.
Broady converted 4 of 8 opportunities and the winner converted 5 of 11 chances. Saville had solid ground strokes striking 28 winners and was successful on 17 of 22 net rushes.
Boy’s Doubles - George Morgan & Mate Pavic

George Morgan (GBR) & Mate Pavic (CRO) defeated Oliver Golding (GBR) Jiri Vesely (CZE)by 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to win boy’s doubles title.
Girl’s Single – Ashleigh Barty
Ashleigh Barty (AUS) defeated Irina Khromacheva (RUS) by 7-5, 7-6 (7-3)

Australian Ashleigh Barty not only had what it takes as she advanced through the draw but she had everything she needed to down second seed Irina Khromacheva of Russia 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Barty’s 7 aces pushed her over the top as she lost serve 4 times compared to Irina’s five service games lost. The win further showed Australia’s resurgence as a tennis power.
Winning both the boys and girls singles is quite an accomplishment and coupled with Bernard Tomic’s inspired play in the men’s division paints a bright future for the Aussies. Barty only lost one set in the tournament.

The Ladies Invitational Doubles
Lindsay Davenport (USA) & Martina Hingis (SUI) defeated Jana Novotna (CZE) and Martina Navratilova (USA) by 6-4, 6-4 to win in the Ladies Invitational Doubles titles.

Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis (NED) won Men’s Invitation Double’s title by defeating Jonas Bjorkman (SWE) and Todd Woodbridge (AUS) by 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11)
