French Open 2012 Winners
At the 2012 French Open in Paris, Rafa Nadal and Maria Sharapova hoisted the biggest trophy’s but there were plenty of other winners.

Men’s Single - Rafael Nadal

In the men’s singles, Rafael Nadal claimed his seventh French Open championship and 11th Grand Slam title by defeating the world’s top player, Novak Djokovic. Nadal was able to halt Djokovic’s string of seven straight Grand Slam final wins over the Spaniard. Nadal also silenced Djokovic’s run at holding all four Grand Slam titles at one time. Rod Laver remains the only living person to have accomplished this feat.
Women’s Single - Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova not only won the women’s singles but se re-claimed her spot at the top of the WTA rankings ousting Victoria Azarenka from her lofty perch.
Men’s Doubles - Max Mirnyl and Daniel Nestor

The top seeded team of Belarus’s Max Mirnyl and Canada’s Daniel Nestor defended their 2011 triumph here by closing the door on America’s second seeded Bryan brothers. Mirnyl and Nestor broke server once in each set and registered the 6-4,6-4 final win.
Mirnyl has become an outstanding doubles partner. His 6’5” frame presents problems for challengers and is well suited for Nestor’s game. In the finals, it was Mirnyl who repeatedly shut down the Bryan brothers with powerful ground strokes while Nestor played the steady tennis that has made him one of the world’s best doubles players.
Women’s Doubles - Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci

Popular Italian Sara Errani and her closest friend Roberta Vinci expanded their doubles resume. After being runner-up in Melbourne, the Italians were not to be denied in Paris. Errani, who was the runner-up in Women’s Singles, and Vinci, the fourth seeds, played through a tough draw. They needed three sets to down the sixth seeded Russians, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the quarterfinals. Then, they stormed past Spain’s Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, the 12 seeds in the semis. In the finals the 7 seeds, Russians Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko, provided stiff competition but the Italian women came from behind to capture the title 4-6,6-4,6-2.
Mixed Doubles - Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupati

India’s Sania Mirza is establishing herself as one of the game’s best mixed doubles and doubles players. At Roland Garros, she teamed with veteran country-mate Mahesh Bhupathi to capture the 2012 French Open Mixed Doubles Championship. The seventh seeds stopped a brilliant run by unseeded Klaudia Jans-Ignacik (Poland) and Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez. The unseeded pair surprised Nadia Petrova and Daniel Nestor in the first round and marched through the draw taking out heavily favored Elena Vesnina and India’s Leander Paes in the semifinals. Mirza and Paes eliminated second seeded team of Kveta Peschke and American Mike Bryan in the quarterfinals and never looked back.
Boys Juniors - Kimmer Coppejans

Canada’s youth movement got another shot in the arm as fifth seed 18-year old Filip Peliwo mowed down all roadblocks on his way to the finals where Belgium’s sixth seed, Kimmer Coppejans, was waiting. Koppejans took control early in the finals and refused to give ground in the straight set 6-1,6-4 championship match. For Peliwa, the loss stung but both players have bright futures ahead.
Girls Juniors - Annika Beck

As expected, Germany’s Annika Beck held form and reached the finals as the second seed. America’s top seeded Taylor Townsend was upended by Slovakia’s Anna Schmiedlova in the third round. The Slovakian held up until the finals where she and Beck played one of the best matches of the entire tournament with the German taking a hard-fought three set win, 3-6,7-5,6-3. Germany continues to put forth great young female players. A crowded stable of thoroughbreds includes Andrea Petkovic (15), Sabine Lisicki (12), Angelique Kerber (10), Julia Goerges (26) and now Beck. Whatever they are eating in Germany, other nations could learn something from this talented corps.
Boys Junior Doubles - Andrew Harris & Nick Kyrgios

Unseeded Australians Nick Kyrgios and Andrew Kelly played through the field knocking pout the Czech tem of Vaclav Safranek and in a tense three set final 6-4, 2-6,10 -7. It was a popular win the Australians who surprised the 8 seeds Luke Bambridge (Great Britain) and Kaichi Uchida (Japan) in three sets and kept on rolling as the underdog in every match. Kelly (13 seed) and the 17-year old Krygios were disappointed in the singles but focused on the doubles.
Girls Junior Doubles - Daria Gavrilova & Irina Khromacheva

Russia’s second seed, Irina Khromacheva and Daria Gavrilova had to come from behind against Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil) and Montserrat Gonzalez (Paraguay), the sixth seed. After dropping the first set, the Czech grabbed two in a row (4-6,6-4,10-8) completing an impressive run.

In visions of yesteryear, Americans John McEnroe and brother Patrick took time form their broadcasting to win the championship over France’s popular team of Henri LeConte and Guy Forget 7-6(5),6-3. The Legends tournaments have become an integral part of the Grand Slam tournaments.

In the Women’s Legends Draw, some familiar names came through the draw with Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis downing Martina Navritolova and J. Novotna 6-4,6-4. The crowds at the Legends events have caught tournament organizer’s by surprise.
All-in-all, it was great fortnight of tennis played by the game’s youthful starts, legendary stars and the current top players in the world. Good job to all@!
