Roger Federer after wining the match

Top seed Roger Federer held form with a convincing win over countryman Stanislas Wawrinka in a straight set 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-2 win on Sunday. Wawrinka has been playing at a high level lately but on Sunday his serve wavered at critical times in the first two sets. When Federer captured the critical tiebreaker, Wawrinka seemed to lose concentration suffering breaks in games three and five of the final set.

For Federer, the win sets up a replay of last year’s finals with Robin Soderling. Soderling cruised past hard playing Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Federer will find a very prepared and more experienced player across the next this year. Soderling is very much in form and playing as well as anyone in the draw.

Czech star Tomas Berdych sent 4th seed Andy Murray packing with a solid 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 win. The Czech has not lost a set in the event and served sharply against the famed Murray return. The match was interrupted by rain and was completed just ahead of dark.

Berdych will meet Mikkhail Youzhny in the quarterfinals. Youzhny jumped ahead of the last remaining French player, Jo Wilfried Tsonga 6-2 at the end of the first set. Tsonga was unable to continue and retired.

Tomorrow, Rafa Nadal, the second seed, Novak Djokovic, the three seed, Fernando Verdasco and Nicolas Almagro will be favored to earn berths in the quarterfinals.

The Women

Nadia Petrova ousted Aravane Rezai

Nadia Petrova ousted Aravane Rezai

First Nadia Petrova ousted crowd favorite Aravane Rezai and then the hard hitting Russian lowered the boom on second seeded Venus Williams, the tour’s hottest player. The tempestuous Petrova finally put two big wins, both upsets, together. Petrova showed no signs of the nervousness that has plagued her career against top ten players.

Petrova will meet another Russian, fifth seeded Elena Dementieva, who has also shown more consistency than usual. Dementieva will be the favorite, but if Petrova keeps powering her groundstrokes, she is a formidable opponent for anyone.

Against qualifier Chanelle Scheepers, Elena never faltered. She used an effective though not overpowering serve and solid baseline play to earn the 6-1, 6-2 triumph and a berth in the quarterfinals.

Winner Poker

Francesca Schiavone played the red clay well against the ever improving Russian tennis babe Maria Kirilenko. Schiavone needed two hours to notch the 6-4, 6-4 win.

Schiavone will meet third seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki, who needed all her immense talent to down Flavia Pennetta in three grueling sets. Te consistent Wozniacki closed out Pennetta in three hours, 7-6 (4), 6-7(5), 6-2. Wozniacki is seeking her first Grand Slam title.

Tomorrow, Serena Williams, Justine Henin, Samantha Stosur and Jalena Jankovic will all be in action looking to seal quarterfinal berths.
