Serena Williams into 2nd Round of Wimbledon 2010

Serena Williams may grunt and she may groan but she always gets the job done in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments.  This time, Portuguese teenager, learned the hard way that it may be a thrill to play on Center Court but Ms. Williams takes no prisoners.

Serena sharpened her skills and worked on her second serve en route to a powerful 6-0, 6-4 triumph that keeps the top seed on course for a third round meeting with former number one Maria Sharapova.  Williams tossed 15 aces at the youngster who got over her nerves and played hard in the second set.

The day’s biggest upset came at the expense of Australian queen Samantha Stosur who played tired tennis for the second week in a row and lost to Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 6-4.  Kanepi is fresh off three qualifying wins and rode her concentration past the seventh seeded Stosur, a finalist at Roland Garros.

It seems the clay court season took a lot out of some of the more successful players.  Roland Garros Champion Italian Francesca Schiavone fell yesterday leaving Wimbledon without a French Open finalist for the first time since the Open era began.

Williams will move on to face Anna Chakvetadze on Thursday.  Anna surprised Andrea Petkovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Chakvetadze was once ranked number five on the tour but is attempting a comeback after a series of personal mishaps.  The Russian will not go quietly.  She is a dangerous second round opponent.  Anna won her only other meeting with Williams when Serena was forced to retire.

Caroline Wozniacki looked gorgeous and played solid tennis as well.  The three seed advanced along with Aggie Radwanska and Flavia Pennetta. 14^th seed Victoria Azarenka played nearly flawless tennis in her straight set win.  Azarenka is beginning to look like herself after a mid season slump and a coaching change.
